Future Learning Inc. has conducted Human Resources and Social Development Canada Essential Skills Interviews Research in Atlantic Canada and developed Essential Skills Profiles for a variety of occupations. We have completed over 150 Essential Skills Occupational Interviews and have written Essential Skills Profiles for 23 Canadian occupations. Future Learning has also developed Essential Skills profiles in conjunction with national occupational standards for the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council, the Mining Industry Human Resources Council; the Electricity Sector Council; and BioTalent Canada. Our Essential Skills Research Team includes five individuals who have obtained certification from Bow Valley College in Essential Skills Occupational Profiling.
Essential Skills are the non-technical skills common to all jobs. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change. The Government of Canada and other national and international agencies have identified and validated nine Essential Skills including: Reading Text, Document Use, Numeracy, Writing, Oral Communication, Working with Others, Continuous Learning, Thinking Skills, and Computer Use.
Essential Skills profiles describe how the nine Essential Skills are used by workers in a particular occupation. Essential Skills profiles may be developed for any occupational group within a particular industry or occupation. Essentials Skills profiles can be useful for hiring employees, identifying training needs, and developing targeted training programs.
