What are Occupational Standards?
Industry associations, sector councils and educational institutions develop occupational standards to identify job competencies, develop training programs, create competency-based certification processes, and promote human resource development within occupations. Occupational standards are job analyses or job profiles that contain criteria-based performance standards.
The Future Learning team has breadth and depth of experience with the development and application of occupational standards for upwards of 30 years. Future Learning has established occupational standards for occupations such as tourism visitor information counsellors, line cooks and cooks for the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Sector Council; underground, surface and minerals processing miners for the Mining Industry Human Resources Council; environmental managers in First Nations and Inuit communities for Building Environmental Human Resources (BEAHR); Canada Prenatal Nutrition Workers in First Nations and Inuit communities for the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada; CEO, VP of manufacturing, intellectual property officer, and regulatory affairs specialist for BioTalent Canada; and coach/mentors of professional drivers for the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council, to name but a few. We have used national occupational standards for paramedics and mental health nurses to conduct competency-gap analysis studies, educational needs assessments and develop strategic plans. We have utilized national occupations standards to design full training programs and conduct accreditation studies for organizations such as the Canadian Dietetic Association.
Future Learning uses the DACUM approach to develop occupational standards. This proven, efficient methodology involves occupational representatives and industry stakeholders and uses a consensus approach to develop the final occupational standards for the organization. It results in the development of competency documents that are relevant to all stakeholders.
